About Fort Polk

Fort Polk, Louisiana, is a 100,000-acre U.S. military training base in Vernon Parish, several miles outside Leesville and about 25 miles from the Texas border. Resident military families and visitors find numerous attractions on the base and within a short driving distance.

Onsite, Alligator Lake is a favorite recreation area that provides open and covered picnic sites, playgrounds, volleyball courts and softball fields, as well as canoe rentals and fishing areas. The Marion Bonner Recreation Site & Nature Trail also is popular with strollers, runners and picnickers. Golfing, bowling, aquatic sports and arts and crafts activities are available. The Showboat Theater offers year-round theatricals and dinner shows. Catfish Cove is a fishing hole especially for children. The fort also provides shopping and fitness centers.

Nearby destinations are varied. Much of the fort acreage is within the Kisatchie National Forest. Leesville offers additional golfing opportunities and canoe excursions. It is home of two notable museums: the Fort Polk Military Museum and the Museum of Western Louisiana (housed in an historic train depot). Alexandria, a larger city 40 miles to the east, expands potential destinations with a zoo, an arts center, museums, a wildlife trail, a wild west show and more golfing options.

The military base, established during World War II, is distinguished for its realistic training simulations of likely combat scenarios (Korea, Vietnam, Iraq). More infantry soldiers were trained at Fort Polk than any other American base during the Vietnam era.
